This is the third and final newsletter ahead of the 4th ITUC World Congress. You will find an overview of key information that you need to know. Please read it through and ensure that you take the necessary preparatory steps.

PRACTICAL

Registration

Please bring a printed copy of the e-mail confirming your registration. It will be required to complete your registration on arrival at the Bella Center, the Congress venue.

Registration will take place at the main entrance of the Congress venue. Once registered, you will receive your badge as well as a prepaid public transport ticket, valid for the duration of Congress, which you can use to get to and from the evening receptions. In addition, you will be provided with a copy of the ITUC’s policy against harassment which outlines what is understood by unacceptable behaviour and what to do in case you have experienced it.

Malmö

On Wednesday 5 December, all participants are invited to Malmö, Sweden for a reception hosted by LO and TCO Sweden. Busses will depart from the Congress venue at 13:00. While the distance is short, we will be crossing an international border. You must bring your passport and badge to get on the bus.

CORE PROGRAMME

Congress Live

Congress Live is the broadcast facility of Congress. Delegations can give a maximum of visibility to their participation by live-streaming an official message to Congress on the Congress website. The recording will be made available for further promotion and a communication expert will be on hand to help draft a press release, if you wish. To be included on the speakers’ list, please go to the Congress Live facility ahead of the allocated time-slot for your region:

Plenaries

Congress will be structured around four pillars, which will each be discussed in respective plenary sessions:

  • Monday 3 December - Pillar 1: Peace, Democracy and Rights
  • Tuesday 4 December - Pillar 2: Regulating Economic Power
  • Wednesday 5 December - Pillar 3: Global Shifts – Just Transitions
  • Thursday 6 December - Pillar 4: Equality

Delegates wishing to address the plenary are requested to register at the “request to speak” desk in the plenary room by 09:00 on the day they wish to speak.

Amendments to the draft Statement should be submitted, in writing and in one of the official ITUC languages, to the secretariat ([email protected]). The deadlines for the submission of amendments are:

  • Pillar 1: 10:00 on Monday 3 December; and,
  • Pillars 2, 3 and 4: 16:00 on Monday 3 December.

Sub-plenaries

In addition to the four pillars, there are three thematic sub-plenaries that will focus respectively on the following themes:

  • Future of Work
  • Wages and Inequality
  • Organising

These will take place simultaneously in three parallel segments in the afternoon on Monday 3 December, Tuesday 4 December and Thursday 6 December.

Vote for the Worst Boss in the World

Who’s made it onto the shortlist for the 2018 Worst Boss in the World? Ten men whose companies have a global footprint have been chosen for their abuses of workers’ rights and activities which undermine the interests of working people. Read the exposé and vote today. The winner of the 2018 Worst Boss in the World will be unveiled during the ITUC World Congress.

Actions in Copenhagen

You will have the opportunity to take action and add your voice to a number of campaigns while at Congress. Take a picture at the campaign photo booth to show your support for the SDGs, climate action, the UN Business and Human Rights Treaty, wage rises, and the end of gender-based violence. Sign up at the challenge corners with your union’s organising target, national wage claim and the gender pay gap in your country.

During the week you can also take part in a rally with Danish unions, join photo opportunities to welcome refugees and support Lula, sign petitions, including on nuclear weapons and disarmament, and join solidarity actions.

Pop Up Legal Clinic

ITUC legal practioners Loredana Carta and Paapa Danquah will be hosting a Legal Clinic between 14:00-16:00 on Tuesday 4 December and Thursday 6 December in English, French and Spanish. If you need advice on labour laws or on taking legal action in support of workers’ rights, stop by the legal clinic in the main reception area.

Lunchtime Talkshow

Chris Burns of Euronews will host a lunchtime talk show in the Congress Live studio on Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 December from 13:00-13:45 with one show in French and one show in English. The show will be live streamed on the congress website. Topics include Unions on the frontline - the triple threats of inequality, climate change and the decline of democracy and Unions fighting for the future - data, democracy and dictatorship. On Thursday 6 December a Spanish language panel will discuss Organising to build workers' power - stories from the melon fields to the shop floor.
